About Fibromyalgia

FMS (fibromyalgia syndrome) is a musco-skeletal pain and fatigue disorder with no known cause. Fibromyalgia means pain in the muscles, ligaments, and tendons – the soft fibrous tissues in the body.

Most patients with FMS say that they ache all over. Their muscles may feel like they have been pulled or overworked. Sometimes the muscles twitch and at other times they burn. More women than men are afflicted with FMS, and it shows up in people of all ages.

Having fibromyalgia is similar to having a very bad case of the flu- all the time. Every muscle in the body is in pain and you feel a serious energy drain.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are both physically and emotionally exhausted. Many feel stressed by the constant need to simply adapt to everyday life. Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is very similar except for the additional persistent muscle pain. Many health experts believe that these two disorders are related.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

• Pain- Deep muscle aching, stabbing, shooting and throbbing. Intense burning pain is also common amongst some sufferers of this syndrome. Pain is usually worst in the morning.
• Fatigue- Can range from mild to completely incapacitating.
• Brain Fog- Very low mental energy, difficulty concentrating.
• Sleep Difficulty- Fibromyalgia associated sleep disorder called the alpha-EEG anomaly. This condition was discovered in a sleep lab using a machine which recorded the brain waves of patients during sleep. Researchers found that Fibromyalgia patients could fall asleep without much trouble, but their deep level (or stage 4) sleep was constantly interrupted by bursts of awake-like brain activity.
• Irritable Bowel Syndrome- About 70% complain of Constipation, diarrhea, frequent abdominal pain, abdominal gas, and nausea represent symptoms.
• Chronic Headaches- Are a common symptom.
