The most important thing about exercise is this: HAVE FUN DOING IT!
Get out move your body and have fun. Most people get caught up in a routine and either get bored, injure themselves or become sore from overexertion. None of this is essence. Forget about the "no pain = no gain". Variety is the spice of life. Mix it up, do something new and interesting. If you're out of shape start out slowly. Don't try to get "back in shape" all in one week. Just enjoy the process. Don't set too lofty a goal. Positive change takes place with consist ant action.
I want to talk for a moment about the easiest, least expensive and best form of exercise: Walking.
Walking is simply the best from of exercise there is. You don't need any special training, you don't need any equipment, (other than a good pair of shoes) You've been doing it all your life. There is very little chance of injury. It gives you a chance to get fresh air and sunshine. If you are not currently on an exercise program, it's important to start out slowly. Far too many people decide they want to get in shape and overdo it the first few days. They end up getting sore, injured, overtired and quit. So start out slowly and gradually work up your time and distance. When you're ready for a more intense workout you can add a small set of hand weights and do some power walking. Walk a different path each day for variety. Don't forget to stop and chat with neighbors or friends for some social interaction.
Once you've built a good foundation of fitness with walking, you might try some biking, swimming or an aerobics class. Whatever seems fun and interesting to you! |
